Between Georgia and Eastern North of Tuckerman Takoma Park was founded and developed as a suburb by Benjamin F. Gilbert in 1883. It was the first commuter suburb in the area and was originally located on approximately 100 acres of land around the B & O Railroad tracks. Gilbert, in planning his suburb, ignored jurisdictional lines, and the original town of Takoma Park straddles the line between the District of Columbia and Maryland. The DC portion is also known as Takoma Park, or more usually Takoma. Much of it is a Historic District. Recent History Washington Post article on Takoma National Park Service webpage on Takoma.
